Motorcycles, ATVs, cars and trucks started this edition from Lima, Peru and they will fight their way through Bolivia and Argentina before finally arriving to the finish line in Cordoba (ARG), after 14 stages and almost 9,000 km.
As we write the bivouac is set in La Paz, Bolivia, for the rest day. All riders and drivers are trying to recharge their batteries and get ready for the next stage (La Paz to Uyuni, where the world-famous salt flats are located).
GIVI is very much involved in this 40º edition of the Dakar, coincidentally in the year when we will also celebrate our 40th Anniversary.
Our sponsorship is supporting the HRC Monster Energy Honda Rally Team on one side, and Italian Enduro legend, local (Brescia) rider Alessandro Botturi, on the other.
The general standings see one of our supporter riders sitting at the top of the classification at the moment: Argentinean Kevin Benavides, aboard his HRC Rally Honda conquered the top position after a grueling day, where the racers passed through the last Peruvian sand dunes to hit the high-altitude trails of Bolivia, in the freezing cold.
Benavides isn't new to great performances in South America, having won the Desafio Ruta 40 race in Argentina before. But maybe his Team captain, the Spaniard Joan Barreda, makes for an even bigger piece of news. “Bam Bam” took control of the race early on, only to succumb to a few navigation errors that delayed him by almost 30 minutes. But he did not give up and on stage 5, knowing that he could make a lot of time on the giant sand dunes before Arequipa, he set a crazy pace and cut his delay back by 10 minutes. He now sits in 4th place overall, ready to attack again as soon as the bivouac leaves La Paz.
Alessandro Botturi, on a Factory Yamaha, has been fighting hard in the middle of the pack for the last few days. The Italian is currently sitting 25th in the general standings, after grabbing a not so good 47th place in the last stage. No worries, though, as he will have 8 more days to climb the general classification, even if it will be more difficult to make a difference and gain time on the competition in the last stages, that are normally faster than technical.
Good luck to everybody!
